
The General English course is a foundational language module designed specifically for first-year Master’s students in the French Department. Its primary aim is to enhance learners’ proficiency in English through exposure to authentic language, practical communication tasks, and thought-provoking topics that reflect both academic and real-world contexts
This course emphasizes the four essential language skills : listening, reading, speaking, and writing within a communicative, student-centered framework. The focus is not only on linguistic accuracy and fluency, but also on critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, and professional expression.
Over the course of two semesters, students will explore five thematically rich units:
Narrative Forms – Understanding and telling stories, exploring past tenses and reported speech.
Mastering Languages – Multilingualism and language learning strategies, modals and verb structures.
Humans and Automation – The role of human skills in a technological world, with modals of possibility and necessity.
Career Preparation – Developing job-related language, practicing interviews, cover letters, and relative clauses.
Climate Control – Engaging with global environmental issues using the present perfect and relevant scientific vocabulary.
Each unit integrates:
Targeted grammar instruction in context
Thematic vocabulary development
Authentic texts and audiovisual materials
Collaborative projects, debates, and simulations
Writing tasks ranging from narrative accounts to structured arguments
The course prioritizes practical language use through:
